Allied Health Week

Even though the Allied Health Professionals Advisor called at the last minute, the Student Dietetic Association jumped at the chance to promote our profession. When she asked if we wanted to use the hour of reserved time in the Terrace of the Wilk, "An hour solely for the SDA to promote dietetics to hundreds of students? Of course!" was our response. Natalie participated in a Q&A panel with students from other health professional clubs such as nursing and pre-podiatry in the Terrace of the Wilk. For the hour activity, we hosted a student competition called, "What's in your lunch?" where students came to the front to present their lunch. Judges ranked them according to balance, moderation, and variety as well as the student's ability to answer nutrition and dietetics-related questions. All received prizes, and the top three won free meals to the Pendulum Court!

ATTENTION JUNIOR CLASS!

Juniors,
If you are at all interested in applying or running for a SDA position, this post is for you!
Here are brief descriptions of what each position does from the current officers:
I apologize that they are not all in the same formats and not ALL of the current positions are here. If you are intersted in a position not listed here, feel free to leave a comment, or email the appropriate seniors.

Objectives of SDA:

The objectives of the SDA shall be to foster a close relationship among the Dietetic students and faculty at BYU, to encourage leadership, to acquaint students with the scope of the dietetic profession, to promote greater interest in and understanding of this profession among students and faculty of BYU and the community, and to give service to the community.

President-- Natalie Nelson

The SDA president leads the council to help fulfill the objectives of the Student Dietetic Association

- Professionally represent SDA and bear responsibility as the presiding officer
- Maintain focus of all goals and events on SDA objectives
- Coordinate responsibilities of all council members
- Act as a liaison between the professors and students (working particularly with Sister Mitchell and Sister Duncan, the SDA faculty advisors)
- Preside at all SDA meetings (typically held biweekly)

What is the time commitment? Is it hard? Is it fun? What exactly does the president have to do? To those questions, my answer is:
I have loved this position because it gives me an outlet for my passion for dietetics and creating lasting relationships among people. I went into it thinking, "you can make it a good year, or you can make it a GREAT year." The SDA president sets the tone and has the authority to do as much or as little with the opportunity as he/she pleases. The club wouldn't function without the dedicated committee of students who consistently use their talents and energy. Delegation is key, but you will certainly spend hours thinking, planning, and implementing (and maybe even dreaming) if your heart is in it!

VP of Community Service

This position involves organizing community service projects for SDA members to participate in. It involves networking with agencies in the community to assess areas of the community that need service. We look for opportunities both on campus and off. It is a great way to establish professional connections and help SDA members earn experience in dietetics related activities while enjoying each others' company in the process. The VP of Community Service is part of the executive committee (President, VPs, Treasurer, Secretary). This means that the VP of Community Service is required to attend all committee meetings. They should support the president and the association in the organization's goals and activities. -- Sincerely, Erica Hansen

Vice President- Activities

The activities VP organizes and oversees the SDA activities such as the opening and closing socials, the Halloween party, pie bake offs, Alumni nights, etc (the sky is the limit...almost :) It is a bit of a time commitment but it is very doable and fun if you can learn to delegate, organize well, and plan ahead. The VP should try and plan things that cater to the wants and needs of the students. The VP also assists the president whenever needed. --Stephanie Haymond

In the event of vacancy of the senior Secretary, succeed for the remainder of the term

In charge of creating calendars (dates of events and meetings)

--Gabe Sargeant

Treasurer Duties:
· Write out reimbursement checks and distribute checks to members.
· Issue receipts for all membership money collected.
· Responsible for SDA fund raisers, particularly the T-shirt fundraiser.
· Assist other officers in planning/ implementing SDA activities.
· Attend all functions of the club including meetings, activities, etc

Treasurer Elect Duties (as a Junior):
· Act as an assistant to the senior Treasurer in helping to handle receipts, helping with fundraisers, and other such duties.
· In the event of vacancy of the senior Treasurer, succeed for the remainder of the term.

--Christa Sheffield

Life Science Rep

Being a Life Science Rep is great because it gives you multiple experiences. For the most part, the first year consists of being a member of the SDA council. This means that you get to be involved with the planning and running of SDA activities. You also have the responsibility of being in charge of our major fund raiser , annual fund letters. The SDA participates every year by writing thank you letters to alumni who donate to BYU, and we receive money for each letter we right.
Your senior year you will be a member of the life science student council. You will take a 1 credit class both fall and winter as well as help build a spirit of Zion in the college. Some things the council is in charge of include, a float for homecoming, the learning center in the Widsto, and encouraging mentored learning. Personally, I have learned a lot from being the Life Science's rep. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. My info is in the directory that was handed out. -Liz Lefevre

Class Representative

The class representative assists the committee with all activities, fundraisers and events. They attend meetings and offer help when needed. They attend activities and support the roles of the other council members. They are also in charge of activities for National Nutrition Month. They plan and implement the games, activities and booths in an effort to raise awareness of good nutrition practices on BYU campus. --Katie Wixom

Newsletter Coordinator

Format, coordinate, and write the newsletter
A one-page newsletter is generally distributed once a month to Juniors, Seniors, and Pre-professionals
Newsletter includes several sections. Ex: Recipe of the month, quote, faculty interview, activity re-cap, upcoming activities etc. etc.

--Sarah Wadsworth

Historian

The SDA historian can do as much or as little as you like! The biggest job is to put together our traditional end of the year slide show showcasing the last 2 years for the closing social. This means that throughout the year, you need to be taking pictures at each of the events (or making sure pictures will be taken). I also write a short review of the activites for future years to know what we did, what worked, and what didn't. It includes the predicted forecasts, budgets, etc. I have also taken the responsibility of adding reviews and other things to the blog to act as a history/ scrapbook for the students and alumni of SDA. --Emily Darquea

Mentor Organizer:

As the mentor organizer, it is your responsibility to take care of setting up the juniors and pre-professionals with the program. We want them to feel prepared, welcome, and comfortable with any questions they may have. This includes assigning mentors, planning events to get them together, and any other activities that can further assist them. --Deborah Haymore

SDA Opening Social!

Well, I just wanted to review our Opening Social for this year! It was awesome!

We held it at the Motion Picture Studio Park on Campus. Right next to the Provo river, it is a beautiful park! The weather was great too!

We had a huge turnout (probably between 75-85 people) with many pre-professionals. It is great to have so many pre-profs come to the activites to help make SDA a success. I think it was a great idea to have the social announced in the pre-requisite classes (ie Chem 285, NDFS 200, etc)

We ate BBQ pork sandwiches, a variety of salads, desserts, and chips! YUM!

We played "Get to Know you BINGO" which turned out to be a pretty good way to get to know other people! :) The prizes for the winners were lunch at the Pen Court! Although we had other games planned, we didn't even need them because we were all so social and having fun just talking to eachother!

Our next activity will be the Halloween Party in October! Come to help make it an awesome party! The Food Science Club will be invited too!

Pictures from the Social will be added soon! :)
